Dr Jane Kotzmann is an Alfred Deakin Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia (2022-2024). Her research project investigates the likely application of statutory interpretation principles to various types of legal provisions recognising animal sentience in Australia, with a view to identifying the ‘real world’ consequences of such provisions. Jane’s broader research interests focus on the recognition of animal sentience and intrinsic worth, and their relevance to prospective animal rights. Jane’s article titled 'Recognising the Sentience of Animals in Law: A Justification and Framework for Australian States and Territories' (2020) (42(3) Sydney Law Review 281) was given an Australian Legal Research Award in 2022 for Best Early Career Research Article. Jane is a member of the Australasian Animal Law Teachers’ and Researchers’ Association Executive Committee. She has published articles in leading international and domestic journals, a monograph with Oxford University Press, and written for The Conversation. Jane is also a regulator contributor of submissions to policy consultations. She holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours), a Bachelor of Commerce, a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Teach for Australia) and a PhD in Law (Human Rights).
