Alexander Jakob Boris Zehnder is Scientific Director of the Alberta Water Research Institute (AWRI) in Canada and President of triple Z GmbH, a Swiss-based consulting firm. He was Director of EAWAG from 1992 and Full Professor of Environmental Biotechnology at ETH Zurich. He was President of the ETH Board from July 2004 to the end of 2007. He retired at the end of May 2008.
Curriculum Vitae
A. Zehnder was born on 21 February 1946 in Goldach SG. He studied natural sciences at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) and completed his basic studies in 1971, after which he worked as a consultant to the World Health Organization (WHO) in Rabat, Morocco, until 1973. In 1976 he completed his doctorate at the Department of Natural Sciences of ETH Zurich. After two years as a research assistant in the Department of Bacteriology at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, he accepted an assistant professorship in the Department of Civil Engineering at Stanford University in Stanford, CA. In 1982, he was appointed Professor of Microbiology at the Agricultural University in Wageningen, Holland, where he headed the Institute of Microbiology until his return to Switzerland.
