Dr. Antoine F. Goetschel to Speak on Animal Law and Policy in Nigeria

Dr. Goetschel to Speak at Ilorin Animal Law Conference

On 19 September 2026, Dr. Antoine F. Goetschel, Founder and President of the Global Animal Law (GAL) Association, will address the conference "Animal Law and Policy: Integrating Protection with Practice" at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. The event is organised by the Animal Welfare Club (AWC) of the University of Ilorin, in collaboration with GAL.

Dr. Goetschel, a Swiss attorney and the world's first officially appointed Animal Attorney, has spent more than thirty years advancing the legal protection of animals. He founded and directed the Stiftung für das Tier im Recht (TIR) in Zurich, teaches animal law at the University of Zurich, and has authored thirteen books and more than fifty articles on the subject. He also co-drafted the United Nations Convention on Animal Health and Protection (UNCAHP).

His talk will examine how animal protection can be translated from legal principle into practical policy, drawing on his experience across Swiss and international animal law. The conference brings together students, academics and practitioners to discuss current developments in animal law and policy across jurisdictions.
