Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW)
Modern

Proposal

The adoption of the Universal Declaration on Animal Welfare (UDAW) proposal by the United Nations General Assembly would provide common ground for building legal protection for animal welfare at universal level. It has the interest to be based on basic principles such as: animal sentience (that can lead towards a universally agreed legal status for animals as sentient beings); animal welfare (as a common objective for all states); the 5 freedoms and 3Rs (as already agreed principles on animal welfare in the contexts of keeping animals for human ends and experiments).

It seems feasible that such an adoption can be reached mid-term as a ‘modern win’. Over 2 million people, 330 animal groups and dozens of governments have already pledged their support for the principle of a UDAW.
