Dr. iur. Nina Kerstensteiner

German Lawyer and Postdoctoral Researcher


Nina Kerstensteiner is a German Lawyer and Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of Regensburg. Her work and research is mainly related to animal law at a local, national and international level.

She studied at the Faculty of Law at the University of Regensburg (Germany). In 2020, she received the title of Attorney at Law. After writing a scientific book on animal rights and welfare, she graduated in 2024 as a Doctor of Law from the University of Regensburg with a thesis on strategic litigation in animal law. Her book received several awards, including the Winter Foundation Prize for the Rights of Nature.

She is currently conducting postdoctoral research on the topic “Weak Interests in Law: Substantive Constructions, Procedural Implementation Mechanisms, and Factual Barriers.” Her research focuses on animal protection law, nature conservation law, and constitutional law. She examines strategic litigation in animal and nature conservation law, analyzing national and international court decisions regarding their contributions to the development of legal frameworks.

She is a member of the Deutsche Juristische Gesellschaft für Tierschutzrecht (German Association for Animal Protection Law) and collaborates with legal experts and organizations to advance the field of animal law.
